Jim Santos at www.demouniverse.com:

Who would expect that after two decades of so-called life on the beer-stained fringes of the NYC rock scene, the Squirrels From Hell would come out with their most accomplished record ever? Having been a fan (and, in the interest of disclosure, friend) of the band for more than 10 years, through an assortment of drummers and lead guitarists, I always knew their potential for greatness. But despite intense live shows and occasional flashes of recorded brilliance (check out "Elevator" on 1998's Nutcracker Suite), it had begun to seem as if a truly rockin' record would forever elude them. No more. The Sound And The Furry is a flawless distillation of the SFH aesthetic: raw punk energy, fractured song structures, insidiously infectious melodies and a paranoid-absurdist worldview. Songs like "My Town," "Maybe Next Time" (featuring a rare lead vocal by guitarist Roger Morrison), "Plague Baby" and "After The Horrible Event" achieve a blend of catharsis and disturbance that is uniquely Squirrels. In this blighted age of Republican rock, it's too much to hope that SFH will achieve success, or even recognition. But damn it, they've earned our respect.
