Jim Santos at www.demouniverse.com:The Band That New York City Couldn't Kill is still going strong 20 years after their first single, as this 7-song EP amply demonstrates. That bassist WILL and guitarist Joe Con continue to hang in there in the face of universal industry apathy is a testament to their uncompromising artistic drive and vision and whatever you think of their music, it's an inspiring thing. Psych-rocking lead guitarist Roger Morrison has been a Squirrel for several years now, and drummer Eric Puente has settled in nicely as well, lending the band a welcome stability, and the youngsters have spurred WILL and Joe to new heights of art-punk oddness. Less bleak and raw than past releases, though no less dark, Nutcracker Suite finds our heros playing with time and genre: "Clues But No Crime" moves from dreamy Santana-like verses to choruses that cut-and-paste punk-rock with a circus waltz. The highlight of this EP, however, is "Elevator," a sort of Mission Of Burma-in-space number with a mad Con vocal and an inspired solo by Morrison. Produced by longtime cohort Kramer, "Elevator" has me hoping the men from Hellsville keep rocking well into the next millenium.
